Photography Business: 3 reasons for a checkup

I know- you’re bogged down in all the things you need to do in your photography business… editing, booking clients, emails.  The list is never-ending.

But the one thing you may be overlooking is the thing that can help keep your business healthy.

Your monthly photography business checkup checklist can be found at boudoirbytracylynn.com. Every month, I look at the health of my business.  Things like income totals, lead generation, website SEO, yearly booking trends, and my email subscriber list.  These things ensure that my business is sustainable and on track to grow.  Plus it takes MAYBE twenty minutes to evaluate. And usually(not always), I get to do a happy dance once it’s over.

So, let’s talk about why the monthly checkup even matters, what it’s costing you if you aren’t taking the few minutes to do it, and how it can help you in the long run.

Why does a monthly checkup even matter?

Maintenance is important to prevent issues. Just like your car gets an oil change to make sure it’s running well, or you have your teeth cleaned to prevent gum disease(by the way my degree is in Dental Hygiene so you may notice I reference that more than the ordinary person), your business needs a check up to maintain it’s health as well.

Every business has goals(or should if they don’t) for several reasons.

  • Keeps you focused on things you want to achieve in your business.
  • Helps you maintain profitability and growth.
  • Keeps you accountable for marketing/blogging/social media posting.

By the way, I have a Goal Planner just for photographers. To get your copy, fill in the form below.

Photography business highs and lows

Probably the thing that helps me sleep the most is checking my yearly booking trends each month.  It shows me how many sessions I’ve shot in previous years, as well as the total inquiries I typically get and consults I do. This way I know where I am compared to other years.

As photographers, we all know photography can be feast or famine.  January is extremely slow while October is so busy you can’t breathe.
With this report, I am able to put my mind at ease if things seem normal, or crank up my marketing/advertising if I need a few more sessions that month.

If you don’t do a monthly checkup- what will happen?

I mean, your business probably won’t go under if you don’t do it, but what a monthly business checkup does is help keep you on track.

The thing I hate is when you get to the last month of the year and realize you haven’t achieved several of your goals. At that point, instead of enjoying the season with family as you should be doing, you are hustling trying to meet the goals you set.

Or maybe you aren’t. Maybe instead you are ignoring the fact that you bombed your goals for the year. Then come January when you go to set your goals for the new year, you are crying in your wine because you were so off in your plans from the year before.

Why not just stay on top of it throughout this year and make your life better/smoother/easier/less stressful?

How can a monthly checkup help your photography business goals in the long run?

The monthly checkup helps in so many ways.

  • Stay organized and on top of things like social media, bookkeeping, your goals.
  • Learn and know your business inside and out.
  • Build systems that work for you AND your business.
  • Figure out your strengths and weaknesses.
  • Maintain profitability.
  • Keep things done and stay focused on the things that are important that help you grow your business.
  • Decide where you may need to outsource.

Staying on top of all of these things and analyzing them regularly is like having your very own business coach.  Business may not be the thing you love to do and the reason you got into photography in the first place, but it’s how you’ll get to stay in photography. Don’t skimp on the little to do lists!

So, we talked about the monthly business checkup and why it matters, goal setting, what it’s costing you if you aren’t taking the few minutes to go through the monthly checkup, and how it can help you in the long run.  And it will help you in the long run.  I promise.

A healthy business is what will keep you from going back to the 9-5 grind working and making money for someone else’s pocket.  That’s what we all want right?

Maybe you started your business because you love photography, but with great systems and a little bit of hustle(but, not too much- enjoy the life you live. You only get one), you can support yourself and your family with a career you love. Not one you are overwhelmed by.

I want to leave you with this quote.

Groom’s Wedding Gift: The Perfect Idea

Bridal boudoir albums are so much better than flasks or watches. I’m sure he will agree.

Have you googled “the perfect groom’s wedding gift” since you started your search for something for your man on the wedding day? If so, I bet the results were something like watches, flasks, whiskey glasses, or tech stuff.

That’s all great and I’m sure he would love it.

But this is your ONE WEDDING DAY. You need to wow him with something unique and personal.

How about a bridal boudoir album? Something to remind him of how lucky he is to get to spend the rest of his life with you.

Not something that you both will set aside in later years. Something you can look back on to remember how hot you were when you were starting your life together.

In this post, I’m going to explain to you what a boudoir session is, why it’s the perfect groom’s wedding gift, touch on what to wear, AND help you figure out how to gift it to him the day of the wedding.

What is a bridal boudoir session?

A bridal boudoir session is just like a normal boudoir session, but the end goal is to have the PERFECT album to give as a groom’s wedding gift on the most important day of your lives.

Hair and makeup, mimosas, and pampering are all included in the session. I guide you on what to bring as far as outfits and even show you how to wear that sexy lingerie you want to surprise him with on the wedding day.

I know what you’re thinking. “But I don’t have a CLUE how to be sexy.”

I’ve got you covered here. I pose you from head to toe during the session. That’s not something you need to even think about before, during, or even after the session.

So, why IS this the perfect groom’s wedding gift?

Like I said before, it’s unique and personal. Unlike the flask or whiskey glasses I mentioned before, this is something he won’t just set aside to collect dust.

When he opens the gift that day, he will be so excited that this beautiful woman is the woman he is marrying and choosing to spend his life with.

It’s something you can BOTH cherish for the rest of your lives. He can look back and remember the woman he fell in love with, while you can remember how confident and beautiful you felt at this point in your life.

But what should you wear?

For in depth ideas, refer to these blog posts… What to Wear: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and 2019 Outfit Suggestions.

But as an overview, you will want to bring:

  • At least one bodysuit- usually a thong so that it’s more high waisted.
  • At least 2-3 bra/pant sets
  • One of his button-up shirts or something meaningful to both of you.
  • High heels- the higher the better

For the underwear, I’d recommend cheekies or thongs and make sure they are one size bigger than you would normally wear to prevent “muffin” over your underwear.

We all have it no matter what size we are, I promise.

Like I said above, be sure to check out those blog posts for more recommendations! Or email me at hello@boudoirbytracylynn.com. I’m happy to answer any questions you have!

How to give this AMAZING groom’s wedding gift

I have an entire blog post written ALL about this topic. But here’s a quick overview on previous client’s ideas.

  • When you would traditionally give the album- just make sure the groomsmen aren’t around!
  • Give him a small nightstand album with less risque images and a super sweet note explaining he will get the rest of the gift later.
  • After the rehearsal dinner so he can get excited about the wedding day(and night).
  • The wedding night when you both are alone.
  • At the Honeymoon, so you can both take the time to enjoy it.

Conclusion

I’m sure you are nervous about a session. Totally understandable.

My client Rebecka said this after hers…

“Tracy is absolutely amazing. Being someone who is self conscious, let alone exposed in front of a stranger, I have never felt more comfortable. She was very friendly, personal, and professional. She made me feel beautiful and like I was simply just hanging out with a friend.”

I am over the moon in love with her work. She really has an eye for making your body look it’s absolute best. I received my album super quick and she was wonderful to work with. 100% so glad I chose her.”

This gift is unlike any other groom’s wedding gift you could choose, plus it’s something you both will enjoy when reminiscing about this time of your life for years to come.
