A Guide to an Outdoor Boudoir Session

For a while now, I considered offering the outdoor boudoir session and decided to pursue it last summer.   It’s a really fun genre of boudoir photography, though not for everyone, and that’s okay.

By the way, scroll all the way to the end for a special offer code when scheduling. AND here’s the scheduling link.

Outdoor boudoir doesn’t make sense?

When I first considered photographing my boudoir clients outside, I thought to myself, this doesn’t really make sense.  Why would anyone wear lingerie outside? But then I thought, who really cares?  Who’s making the rules? If we want to photograph lingerie outside, let’s do it.  Boudoir photography is whatever the creator(s) decide it is.  These outdoor boudoir photos are beautiful, the light is gorgeous, and I get to get out of the studio in the summer to enjoy the beautiful weather!

What should you wear to these sessions?

A big question I get asked, and one I thought long and hard on, was what should clients wear to these sessions?  Although you will be photographed on my farm in Southern Illinois, this isn’t something for which you need to dress super “country.”  If it suits you, your style, and your personality to dress more western, then definitely go for it, but if you are a city girl at heart, then dress the way you want. Honestly, I think you can wear as much(or as little) as you want. Implied always works SUPER well for outdoor boudoir sessions.

My clients from this month all chose very different styles! Maddie chose a few bodysuit outfits and a few dresses.  Vi is a little edgier and chose more implied outfits and then a dress to finish the session out.  Madi wore some lingerie and a few off the shoulder shirts that were a little more country with her cowboy boots. Stephanie went for a more lingerie style outdoor boudoir session. I literally love every single outfit that was chosen and think it fits each woman’s personality to a tee.

So, where do these Outdoor Boudoir Sessions take place?

My family has a farm in Anna, IL, about 20 miles south of Carbondale, Illinois.  where we raise cattle and train horses.  One of the pastures is super secluded,  PERFECT for an outdoor boudoir session. There is a very cute creek with little waterfalls, grass, trees, and the most beautiful flat rocks ever!

Seriously, would you ever think this image was taken in Southern Illinois?

Right outside of this little area, there is a pasture on top of a hill, which has GORGEOUS light and beautiful green grass. We usually start the session at the creek, and finish on the hill in the pasture.

Can horses be in the photos?

For liability reasons, I am not allowing my horse or the farm horses in the photos or around for the session.  You are more than welcome to bring your own horse for your outdoor boudoir session, though. The photos are amazing when you throw in a beautiful horse!

Precautions

Remember, we will be out in the woods in the middle of the country.  Things you may encounter are ticks, snakes, bugs, etc. Come prepared with walking shoes, bug spray, and bags to carry your outfits!

4 Vacation Photography Tips you’ll need this summer!

When you’re on vacation, it’s great to live in the moment– but it’s also nice to have some photos from your trip! It’s all about finding that balance! I know many of you may be going to some fun places with your family, so I put together vacation photography tips to help you catch those incredible memories. Whether your child is two or fifteen, this is your first trip as husband and wife, or this is your twentieth year anniversary, you want to be sure to remember them for years to come.

Capture the Details

There are so many new and fun things to see when you visit a new place.  Be sure to photograph the cool things so you can remember it!

Think about photographing the sunrise or sunset, the way the water moves, the fish you catch, the food you eat, the fun signs they may have in the restaurants, etc.  Also photograph your kids playing in the waves in the early morning, or your new husband walking down the beach to you.

Did you notice that most of my details are near the ocean?  I love the beach so much.

Photograph the Moments

What I mean by this is catch the quiet moments when your baby is asleep, and photograph him/her having the time of their life as well.  Photograph your husband lying on the beach taking a nap or playing in the waves while you read a book. Don’t miss the moments just because you don’t think it’s important now.  It’ll be important one day!

Rule of Thirds and Leading Lines

If you aren’t a photographer, you may not even know about this.  It’s a composition basic in photography, though. Basically, things are more pleasing to the eye if you place things in a third of the photo. Check out this article to see more about it, but a basic overview is in the photo below.  It has leading lines, AND follows the rule of thirds a bit.  It isn’t technically perfect, but I was on vacation and more worried about having fun than having perfect photos!

The boat dock leads your eye straight to the sunset in the right third of the photo, so it includes the leading line and the rule of thirds.  Just know you won’t have access to leading lines in every photo you take, and don’t spend your whole vacation searching for them. If you stumble across leading lines, though, put them to use!

Forget Perfection

I think this is the most important vacation photography tip I can give you. It’s one I definitely subscribe to when on vacation. Enjoy the moment and forget about perfection. Vacation doesn’t happen often and while it is a great time to practice with your camera, it’s also a time to enjoy your family.

I still worry about light and the way it falls while on vacation, but what I really want to capture is the feelings on vacation.  It’s not going to matter in 50 years how perfect your photos are.  It’s going to mean more to just have them to look back on.

The Most Important Vacation Photography Tip

The most important vacation photography tip I can leave you with is to just enjoy your vacation. Take the photos with your iPhone and leave your camera in the room if it helps you enjoy those moments.
