Boudoir Session Prep//St. Louis, MO

Boudoir session prep is a question I answer a lot in emails to clients! There isn’t a lot to do thankfully, but there are some key points to consider when prepping for your session.  Be sure to read to the bottom because I have a checklist download for you!

To tan or not to tan?

This is probably the most asked question I get. I recommend spray tans, which I know some photographers are completely against.  I happen to love that glow you get with the spray tan.  I really like the mystic tan at Palm Beach Tan, but I know other salons have mystic tan booths as well. I also LOVE Just Fakin Tans as well.  I have had several clients use her, and the spray tan is flawless, plus she contours your body as well!

One thing I will never ever recommend is tanning in the tanning bed.  I am not here to support skin cancer.

What to wear?

What to wear is probably the absolute most common boudoir session prep question I receive. I have so many what to wear options on this blog post.  It has tons of info about fitting and why or why not for certain types of outfits. If you are curvey, check out this post for tips to flatter your curves.

You will want to have 2-3 EXTRA outfits than what the allotted amount for your session.  This allows for extra if something just isn’t working or if we possibly have a little extra time.  You will also want at the minimum 2-3 bra and panty sets.  Be sure they are a size larger than you normally wear to prevent stretching of the lace and to prevent muffin tops!

Should you wax?

Don’t wax just because you are having a boudoir session.  But if you are a waxer, wax the week before to prevent bumps, redness, or rashes.

Some other things to consider for boudoir session prep.

  • Drink lots of water the week before the session.  Hydration is important for glowing skin!
  • Eat your fruits and veggies the week before.  I’m not saying go on a crazy diet.  What I mean is just watch the salty/high fat snacks to prevent bloating!
  • Moisturize the week before, and especially the day of your session for smooth, glowing skin.
  • Come with clean, dry hair and a clean face for hair and makeup, unless otherwise discussed.

Boudoir Photos for the Empowered Woman

A few weeks ago, I spoke with and then photographed Missy Bliss, an intimacy coach in the South St. Louis area. She actually coaches one of my clients, who recommended I contact her. Several times this year I have mentioned that 2018 is the year we need to learn to love ourselves through boudoir photos and other means.  With a team behind you, I definitely think you can!

The Wholly Empowered Woman: I took Boudoir Photos In My Underwear and I Don’t Regret It At All.

Part of being good at what I do as an Intimacy Coach is being a phenomenal leader. That’s why, after finding myself with the opportunity to have a fancy boudoir photo shoot with a very talented local photographer, I literally jumped out of my chair shouting “YES!”

Little did I know, I was signing up for a rollercoaster ride of emotions, forced to deal with things I thought I’d already conquered. Building body confidence is no joke.

After ending my conversation with a very well known and very talented local photographer, Tracy Lynn, I was grinning from ear to ear. I had agreed to take boudoir photos in lingerie and post them for the whole world to see.

We were going to share these photos far and wide, and they were going to represent something Tracy and I are both deeply passionate about, women being proud of their real life bodies.

A few more minutes of initial excitement passed and then it hit me… I had just agreed to take photographs in lingerie and allow the whole world to see them.

Cue Critical Thoughts

I have birthed and nursed two children. My love affair with brownies is serious and legitimate. That big scar on my right knee from the bike accident in the sixth grade is still visible.

What’s my Mom going to think of these boudoir photos? Will my man be okay with this? I need to call my personal trainer and tell him we need to ramp it up big time. Shopping for the perfect outfit is a must do. Do people still tan? Will it look like I think too highly of myself? I’m proud of these stretch marks, but I have no idea if they photograph well. Wait, am I actually proud of these stretch marks?

I have spent nearly a decade teaching women to fall madly in love with themselves, but people are often confused about what I actually do.

Intimacy isn’t just about sexy time with your partner. It’s about telling the truth about who you are, even if you can be rejected, telling the truth to yourself to begin to build a wild and sustainable romance with who you are behind the smile, clothes, and lifestyle. The goal is to learn to love yourself so deeply and purely that the rest of your world naturally falls into alignment.

The Road to the Session

The weeks leading up to my photoshoot were difficult. It was so hard to determine where I actually stood with  it. I love seeing women photographed in their glorious authentic bodies. I should be good to go, right?

I’m fit, but I’m fit-ish. Observation of Taco Tuesday is a religious and spiritual practice, but hey, I burn those calories. Though I am in my mid thirties,  I look slightly younger. I know how to dress for my body shape, what makeup looks best on me in photographs, and I’m a freaking leader in this community. I’VE GOT THIS! Everytime a critical thought popped up I would repeat my go-to mantra “I AM ENOUGH!”

Little by little, I could feel the anxiety gently turning back into excitement. I was on a roll with my workouts, went tanning, and, to my delight, everyone I told about my upcoming shoot was deeply supportive. Whenever I stopped to look into a mirror I would affirm that even if Tracy and I only empowered one woman to love herself more through these boudoir photos, that was enough for me.

The Session

The morning of the photoshoot was cold and grey. I arrived for hair and makeup a few minutes early, thinking very seriously about running in the opposite direction. Instead, I kept repeating “I AM ENOUGH!” in my mind.

I walked in to The Blowout Bar and was greeted by my lovely hair and makeup genius, Kendra.  The whole process went by without a hiccup. I left feeling so glamorous in those big makeup lights and ready for the camera! Tracy’s chic loft studio is located in one of the hippest neighborhoods our city has to offer. There was definitely a subtle energy of style and sophistication when walking up to the building.

After being buzzed in, I took the elevator up, breathing deeply the whole time, holding a bag filled with gorgeous lingerie and shoes, ready to use them. It was finally happening!

I felt right at home walking into the studio. The sky was grey outside, but it was so warm and cozy inside. She talked with me for a bit, putting some more of my critical thoughts to rest, and then gave me the tour.

We looked through my wardrobe options and then she closed the door to the large dressing room. Suddenly it was me, in my gorgeous hair and makeup, practically naked in front of the mirror.

“I Am Enough”

I don’t think I actually thought about how to pose my body once before that moment. Luckily, Tracy knew just what to do. “Turn your head a few degrees toward the ceiling.” “Lift your back” “Look at this spot on the wall” “Breathe all the way out and twist.”

After this session, I have a new respect for models! It wasn’t an easy thing to do at all. I held the poses like I would in yoga, breathing through them and listening to my body, and loving myself for being brave enough to show up.

Tracy showed me the boudoir photos as she took them. She used them to both empower me to see my beauty and to show me which poses worked best for my body. We used the in between time to discuss our shared passion for empowering women to love themselves. Several wardrobe changes and countless laughs later we were all done.

In about a day I was choosing from the proofs that made my eyes swell with tears. I actually did it and I was so happy I did. The boudoir photos were stunning. Here I was, Intimacy Coach Missy Bliss, falling in love with my real life body again.

The Lesson a Boudoir Shoot Can Teach

The lesson I re-learned from this is your real life authentic body looks like anything you want it to look like. Maybe you do workout before, or maybe you don’t. If you go tanning or wear a push up bra or not, it’s up to you. You decide how much makeup, what lingerie, and what makes you feel good about you. Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone, but no one wants you to feel like someone else completely.

These are gorgeous boudoir photos of the real you, whatever that means to you. I often tell my clients that radical self love is not optional. I am so glad I took my own advice. After two babies and a lifetime of life, I am very proud of the work Tracy and I have done.

The Seasons of Boudoir Photography

There are so many times in one’s life that deserve to be memorialized with a boudoir session. Bridal, maternity, and after the kids, when your body has grown life, are all times you deserve a way to remember each change in your body.  I’ve written before about the traditional anniversary gifts, but I wanted to delve more into the different seasons of boudoir photography  and why each is important and should be remembered!

white high wasited body suit//white-washed jeans//messy curls//dramatic hair and makeup//booty photo//The seasons of boudoir photography//photo by Boudoir by Tracy lynn//see more at

Remember, these are just the times I, personally, feel boudoir sessions are ideal.  I realize life happens, the “ideal” times may be a bit out of order, and that’s okay! If we stick pretty close to this schedule, though, when you are old and gray and thinking back on your life, you will have a volume of albums as a record of these changes your body has been through while you were a busy woman in St. Louis, MO! How cool is that?

Bridal Boudoir Photography

white lace panties//wedding veil///dramatic hair and makeup//booty photo//The seasons of boudoir photography//photo by Boudoir by Tracy lynn//see more at

The majority of my clients are brides, which I absolutely love. This is such a fun, although stressful, time in one’s life. I’m always so happy they trust me with such an important and vulnerable piece of their wedding.

Why is a bridal boudoir photography session such an important season to be photographed?  Let’s be honest here.  Brides are likely in the best shape of their lives.  This is when they have been working out hard in preparation for being in a huge crowd of people. Brides are eating healthy, their hair is long, and their skin is glowing!  It’s the “ideal” time to record a boudoir photography session. But also, who doesn’t was more souvenirs of such a fun and exciting time of your life!?

Maternity Boudoir Photography

maternity boudoir photo//black lace maternity gown//red curly hair//dramatic makeup//The seasons of boudoir photography//photo by Boudoir by Tracy lynn//see more at

Women can create a life, with the help of their significant other of course. What better way to celebrate this miracle than with a boudoir session celebrating their body?  I personally feel that every woman should experience a maternity boudoir session.  Honor the work your body is putting in to create that precious baby you will hold in your arms soon!

The best time I have found for a maternity boudoir session is around 7 months or so. The belly is at that cute round stage, but you can still get around somewhat easily, which will make posing easier!

Five Year Anniversary

I have not had kids, but I will tell you at our five year anniversary, my body still looked decent, but had definitely changed from what it was when Cody and I first married.  Whether your body is in better shape than it’s ever been, you have stretch marks from having kids, or you have gained a few pounds, your husband loves you for who you are. This is a time in one’s life that’s completely different from the first bridal boudoir session.  Most women are completely different after five years– and this is a great thing! You and your husband have grown together in this time, and he will love to see this you in a boudoir photography session. Plus you probably haven’t felt as beautiful as you really are since your wedding, so this is a great time to change that!

Seven Year Anniversary

For the seven year anniversary, I think that having a boudoir session in the opposite season as your five year anniversary album is the ideal situation.  What I mean is if you have your five year session in the summer and wear mostly flowery colors and summer outfits, let’s do your seven year anniversary in the winter and wear more warmer winter outfits in cooler colors!

I think this anniversary is more for you than for your husband but rest assured he will appreciate it! This is a great time to remind yourself that you are beautiful and deserve the pampering.  You are more than just a wife and a mom. You are a woman, too!

Ten Year Anniversary

white sheer curtain//black lace bralette and thong//bedroom boudoir photo//The seasons of boudoir photography//photo by Boudoir by Tracy lynn//see more at

The ten year anniversary is a big anniversary overall. This is a great anniversary gift that he will obviously love. It’s not exactly the “traditional anniversary gift“- that’s tin/aluminum. HUH?!  What would you even get that’s tin or aluminum? A barn? Anyway, this is way better for you and for him than the traditional gift.

This is also the time when you should go all out for your session.  All the new lingerie, the fur, the jewelry, new shoes- all things he hasn’t ever seen before! He will love seeing you in this new light and you will feel like a new woman during the session and when you see the album!  You will be a completely different person ten years after your wedding and we need to be sure we catch the new you!

Fifteen Year Anniversary

white button up// thigh high black socks//black bra//cream chaise lounge//The seasons of boudoir photography//photo by Boudoir by Tracy lynn//see more at

At this point, it may have been five years since your last boudoir session.  A lot of changes happen in five years to your body.  I don’t think that is a bad thing though.  I want to embrace your curves and show you that the changes are a beautiful thing.  This is the perfect time to update your boudoir photos! Besides, the clothing styles will have changed, or your style in general as you age.

Twenty Year Anniversary

gray sweater off the shoulder//gray knee high socks//long hair// boudoir session as you age//The seasons of boudoir photography//photo by Boudoir by Tracy lynn//see more at

Your twenty year anniversary is possibly more important than the rest! You have likely raised a family (or are just finishing up), you have your life together, and you and your husband may be relearning how to be together without your kids! Use this season in your life to have a boudoir session photographed. It will help you remember how beautiful you are, and give you confidence in yourself.  It will help you remember that you are a woman and deserve to feel important.  Plus your husband will love it!

I may have stopped listing anniversaries here, but I don’t think that this is the last time you should do a boudoir session! You should continue to have a boudoir session photographed every three to five years, just to continue to memorialize your growth and maturity throughout your years.  All seasons of life are beautiful! Let’s celebrate it!

Other Seasons of Boudoir Photography

black scarf//black thong// white rug//boudoir photo//The seasons of boudoir photography//photo by Boudoir by Tracy lynn//see more at

Some other times in your life that deserve to be remembered with a boudoir photography session could be a recent divorce or break-up, weight loss, fitness competitions, a confidence boosting session, or simply because you want to. My clients will all tell you that the session ends up being more for you than for whom you are gifting it!

Like I said before, I think if you take the time to have your session photographed at most of these times in your life( I realize it may not happen every time), you will really appreciate this as you get older.  Your daughters, granddaughters, great-granddaughters will, especially, love looking through the volume of boudoir albums, I promise! And we can keep any implied nudes out of those albums 😉

I would love for you to join me over on Instagram and in my Facebook group!  Please be sure to join my email list as well.  You will always be the first to hear about special offers and sales there!

Spa Day

The Four Seasons Hotel Spa.  So I have always wanted to go to this spa but haven’t made time.  They have a Bissinger’s Chocolate Spa Treatment, which sold me with that name.  The spa uses the cacao to exfoliate and then use cocoa butter to moisturize, plus you get to leave smelling like the Caramel Room, which is reason enough for me.

If you aren’t interested in the chocolate experience, regular spa treatments, massages, manicures, pedicures, and facials are also offered.
